FAD DIETS

BEWARE OF FAD DIETS
Current popular weight loss diets called Fad Diets promote higher protein and lower bohydrate intakes than those recommended by dietetic associations world wide. To name a few, these fad diets are: The Zone diet, Protein Power, sugar busters, Dr. Atkins’ New diet Revolution and the Carbohydrate Addict’s diet.

These diets claim that carbohydrates trigger the release of insulin, which in turn stores carbohydrates as fat. This condition may lead to weight gain. The relationship between insulin and obesity is much more complex than what these diets claim. Factors such as genetics and physical activity also influence obesity.  Diets which promise weight loss are often lower  on overall calories, so there is likely more weight loss regardless of the types of food taken. Higher protein and lower carbohydrate diets are not recommended because of the following reasons:
1- Dehydration may occur. Loss of water causes the reduction in weight. Consequently, the dieter gains back his/her weight quickly;
2- Ketosis may result. This is the condition when fat instead of carbohydrate is used for energy to keep a person going. This is dangerous. It may cause dehydration, headaches, fainting, irritability and kidney problems;
3- Fad diets have more protein and more fat than the amounts recommended by dietetic associations worldwide. A higher than normal protein content may result in kidney problems as well as increased loss of calcium through the urine. Similarly, a high fat diet may put the person at risk for heart disease and obesity;
4- Fad diets may not provide enough fiber or protective antioxidants;
5- These diets may be too low in calcium and vitamin D, which can contribute to osteoporosis;
6- These diets may not provide enough fuel for exercise;
7- These diets may lead to disordered eating.

How can you tell a fad diet from a sensible weight loss regime? A fad diet:
1- Promises a large or fast weight loss (more than 2-4 kg/week).
2- Does not include suggestions to consult with the doctor or dietitian.
3- Encourages dieters to eliminate entire food groups or eat from a limited selection of foods.
4-Offers rigid menus that don’t consider the dieter’s likes, dislikes and lifestyle.
5- Neglects active living or lifestyle changes.
6- Provides fat fewer calories than what is needed for an energized healthy lifestyle.
7- Depends on special products, supplements or treatments
8- Has miraculous claims.
9- Relies on testimonials and anecdotes rather than scientific evidence.

Sensible food choices from The Food Pyramid, plus regular physical activity are a winning combination for achieving and maintaining a healthy weight. Consult a dietitian to determine your ideal body weight and he/she will plan a customized diet for your which is within the guidelines of healthy and safe weight loss.
